Frank Lazzaro Rizzo was an American police officer and a politician. He was born on 23 October 1920; he was the police commissioner of Philadelphia from 1968 to 1971. He was a brooding and stubborn man that didn’t like entertaining the media at all. His reputation with the black community was very insensitive, and research shows that he was a racist targeting the black community mainly. While Frank Rizzo incited anger from the black liberals and activists, he also gained popularity by increasing the police budget by fifty percent. His infamous activities were high compared to good reforms.

His reign during his tenure as a commissioner and mayor has some famous and infamous momentsincluded in:

  • More than 1000 people assembled around judge joseph Sloane’s courtroom to witness him take the oath of taking up the top post of Philadelphia police force.
  • In 1971 Frank Rizzo quit as commissioner to run for the election of the mayor. He was acted as a mayor even before he was elected. He won against the congressman William j. green, and won with the campaign slogan of ‘ Rizzo means business,’ becoming the first Italian mayor of Philadelphia.
  • In 1975 during the re-election, he came up with the campaign name as “make Attila the Hun look like a faggot.”


During his reign, he became quite famous for his works and got selected for two terms, but after the second term, he couldn’t win and continue to his third term. He died on 16 July 1991.
